Stellenbosch FC have been promoted to the Premier Soccer League after a draw against Maccabi FC. The National First Division Champions won the league with three points after Ubuntu FC claimed a 1-0 against Royal Eagles who occupied the second position on the log.
Stellenbosch will for the first time compete in South African top-flight, with Royal Eagles and Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila compete in the promotional play-offs for the Premier League promotion.
Stellenbosch FC head coach, Steve Barker have praised his side for their hard work after settling the promotion.
Barker said that the players have stood up and been counted.
“They’re a young group of players with not one single player having experience of winning a league title.”
“So for us to have actually stayed on top of the league for 23 weeks is testament to the work ethic and hard work they put in and they deserve everything they get, they deserve to be promoted,” Barker added.
However, the win was not enough for the Cape side, Ubuntu who could not avoid relegation alongside Witbank Spurs, as they finished second from the bottom of the log. Ubuntu FC were flogged 4-0 by Jomo Cosmos on Sunday. The two teams will be joining the South African third tier, ABC Motsepe League.
The promotion playoffs will begin on Tuesday 15 May.
