The premiere of the most talked about TV drama on the twitter street, The Republic, has on Sunday evening, had fans relating the storyline to how the South Africa’s former President Jacob Zuma lost his term of office.
Created by Phathutshedzo Makwarela and Gwydion Beynon of Tshedza Pictures, The Republic tells the story of present day politics in South Africa by outlining service delivery issues, corruption in the political landscape and looting of state money among other things.
Veteran actress Florence Masebe as South African President Lufuno leads the cast, while Warren Masemola stars as Thabang Manaka, a fallen hero trying to make amends for his past mistakes and Masasa Mbangeni as Bridget Ranaka, a high-class young woman from a rich family in Soshanguve Township in Tshwane.
On the premiere, the storyline details the events of 2009 when President Kgalema Motlanthe’s term in office ended; President Hendrik Mbuli whose presidency was perforated with corruption and looting of state funds replaced him.
Mbuli is fired from government making way for the party’s secretary Lufuno to take the reins as a new president. On the first episode, viewers were introduced to President Mulaudzi who has spent two years fighting corruption and prosecuting those who benefitted from Mbuli’s presidency – including Mbuli himself.
The Republic is set to be an exhilarating political showdown and a story of political smarts and survival.
