The Spar Proteas could be millionares at the end of their 2019 Netball World Cup campaign.
The sponsor of the domestic netball league, Telkom, have pledged to give each player R1 million should the team proceed to the finals and win the 2019 vitality World Cup. Moreover, if the team bring home silver medal, each player will be rewarded with a whopping R500 000.
“The SPAR Proteas are on a winning streak having won all four matches to make it to the quarter finals. Telkom is confident that the team will continue this winning streak and players should be rewarded for this performance”, said Mooketsi Mocumi, Executive Group Communication at Telkom.
“I think it is only fair that we pay these ladies such monies, they have earned them. Even before we talked money with them, they were here doing the most, delivering and winning games that have put us in the position that we are. I think we need to reward great work when we see it, in this team I see greatness and believe that they can deliver silverware for the country. To our sponsors Telkom who believed in my vision, I just want to say thank you for enabling us to change lives,” says Cecilia Molokwane, Netball South Africa President.
This will be the first that netball players in South Africa earn such monies. The sport is definitely growing in the country, we are seeing an uptake in the sport and during the recently concluded Telkom Netball League, we saw more players being paid more than what they had previously earned in the past and more sponsors coming on board.
The Proteas have shown a great deal of commitment winning all the games they have played, beating FIJI, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and finishing off with Scotland.
