Professor Phakeng received honorary degree at Bristol University

University of Cape Town Vice Chancellor Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng joined Bristol University graduating students on Monday afternoon as she received an honorary degree for her substantial contribution to the development of mathematics education in South Africa.

Phakeng received highest accolades in her academic journey as a student and as a professional. Among her academic titles, the UCT vice chancellor notched up a BSc, an MSc, and a Ph.D.

Phakeng said that she was grateful for the honour and privilege for her to accept the honorary doctoral degree.

“To me, it is more than individual recognition. This is a recognition of the many people who made me, those I represent, the many young boys and girls all over the world, especially in my home continent of Africa, living in poverty and wondering if things will ever get better.”
