Lengthy sentence for hijackers

Hijackings are very common in South Africa and law enforcement has decided to impose a harsher sentence in the hope of scaring away would be offenders. Captain Xoli Mbele of the SAPS told Gauteng News how 3 suspects got a 15 year sentence each for hijacking.

“Amukelani Sambo (32) Xolani Mahwayi (27) and Arishaad Bowman (34) were sentenced to 15 years imprisonment each for car hijacking in the Johannesburg Magistrate Court on the 06th of September 2019. The accused were also declared unfit to possess a firearm”, says Mbele.

The incident took place on 27 October 2018 at Crown mines at approximately 6pm. A 41-year-old male driving a white Nissan NP 300 stopped to inspect the company car after being bumped from behind by another vehicle. Once he had exited his vehicle he was approached by 2 assailants who threatened him with a gun.

The suspects then took off in his vehicle leaving the victim stranded but fortunately he spotted police officers at a nearby BP filling station and approached them. He accompanied the police to the Langlaagte area where he spotted his vehicle along Nasrec road.

Police stopped the vehicle and apprehended all three suspects who have since been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment.

“This conviction is the result of the diligent work done by Investigating officer Sergeant Van Rooyen of Johannesburg District Trio Detectives. We hope this sentence will scare away would be offenders from committing the same crime”, concluded Mbele.
