A 25 year old woman was arrested when she attempted to kidnap a baby at Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital, in Soweto. She was stopped in her tracks when the maternal mother’s screams were heard by security guards who then rushed to the latter’s aid.
The suspect is alleged to have been a fellow patient who had been discharged a day before the kidnapping and had befriended the would-be victim. She had offered to accompany the mother and her child to the bathroom while pretending to play with the toddler.
Upon getting there the mother realised the suspect’s intentions and screamed for help just in time.
The suspect was apprehended before she escaped with the child and was immediately arrested for kidnapping.
She will appear at the Orlando Magistrate court on 8 October.
