Police arrested two suspects between the ages of 28 and 36 for attempted business robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition at about 19:30 this past Sunday.
Three suspects allegedly attempted to rob a supermarket on corner Mooi and Albertina Sisulu street when the shop was about to close. A general worker had stepped outside to close the roller door when he was accosted by a gunman who pointed a pistol at him.
“The suspect forced him inside the shop and was later joined by two of his accomplices. The two suspects had firearms and demanded money from the workers. The victim’s brother was able to scream for help which then forced the robbers to flee the scene”, says Captain Xoli Mbele.
Community members who witnessed the ordeal came to the workers’ rescue and managed to apprehend one suspect after assaulting him. The second suspect was arrested by police after they gave chase. Two firearms with live ammunition were recovered.
They will appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrate Court. Johannesburg District Commander Major General Masha is appealing to the community to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
