Learners busted for armed robbery

Police arrested three pupils between the ages of 15 and 17 for armed robbery at Atkinson House, on corner Albert and Eloff Street, on Wednesday morning (16 October) at 10am.

Three learners are alleged to have robbed a 13-year-old pupil at Ghandi Square on October 15th (Wednesday) at 16:00. The victim was waiting for a bus to take him home on his way back from school.

The three suspects approached him with two of them threatening him with a knife and a pair of scissors. They took his cellphone and ran away afterwards. The victim then screamed for help and managed to catch a security guard’s attention. One suspect was caught and the other two got away. The pair of scissors and knife used to rob the victim were recovered afterwards.

Captain Xoli Mbele then told Gauteng News how the father of one of the suspects cooperated with the police and turned his son in. “Yesterday morning [16 October] at 09:30 one of the suspects’ father, who got away, called the police and requested that they come to his residential place. Our officers went there and recovered a cellphone belonging to the victim.

“The suspect was then arrested for armed robbery and possession of a stolen cellphone. All suspects were later released to the care of their parents”, explained Captain Mbele.

The investigation is underway and all suspects are appearing today at the Johannesburg Magistrate Court.
