Angry residents protest as rape suspect applies for bail

Protest have erupted outside the magistrate court in Makhanda on Wednesday after residents in the area chanted against the bail of yet another rape suspect.

Angry residents were up in arms following another Gender-Based violence case that has been brought forward to the Grahamstown high court. It is believed that the accused, whose identity is not revealed for safety reasons, has attempted to rape his niece in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The victim who is still a minor alleges that her uncle had kicked down the door, slapped her and ripped her clothes off. She said that she tried to fight to keep her undergarments on whilst her uncle stripped naked and forced himself on her. She managed to escape and ran to the neighbors who alerted the community and the uncle was arrested.

 A child whose identity is known to Rhodes Music Radio was in attendance as the mob displayed placards bearing various message of their disapproval of the alleged being released. 

A petition was being signed during the protest to stop the accused from being granted bail. This petition included another long list of alleged rapists who were still roaming free around Grahamstown. Residents, including the mother demanded justice requesting the alleged rapist to stay behind bars.
