The President of ActionSA Herman Mashaba has on Wednesday visited the bereaved families of three boys who drowned last Saturday in a waterlogged stormwater trench, in the Hammaskraal City of Tshwane.
Mashaba said the visit takes place after the family of late Samuel Maphoso (10), Kutlwano Mkhwanazi (9) and Tshepo Machete (10) held a meeting with the party to represent them against the City of Tshwane.
“The families believe that the City of Tshwane and the contractors neglected to secure the stormwater trench. They are blaming their children’s death in the city and say they should be charged and have civil claims lodged against them. It is also implicated that the contractor engaged to secure the stormwater trench is unknown. The city must explain how it can allow services of an unknown contractor”, he said.
Mashaba added that as South Africans, they cannot allow these kinds of tragedies to continue happening to the children and families.
“People elect representatives for their interests in public service but get disappointments as they are taken for granted. For this reason, ActionSA has accepted the plea of bereaved families to take the case and hold the City of Tshwane as well as the contractor accountable for lost lives of the three minors”, he said.
Mashaba said his party will engage the services of their legal team and take the matter forward. He added that they thank the families for putting their trust in them at this difficult time of losing their children.
