Following allegations that Alexandra residents are planning to illegally occupy containers based at Marlboro Testing grounds, City of Joburg has confirmed giving them to Alex residents.
City of Joburg spokesperson Nthatisi Modingoane said containers were put there for temporary location. He said they will be used as homes and de-densification of informal settlements in Alexandra.
“We will use them in Alexandra and other parts of Johannesburg. Our aim is to improve community lives by providing safe conditions of living.Containers were brought in response to Covid-19 for homeless people due to corona. Department of Housing chose Johannesburg Social Housing Company to implement delivery of containers”, he added.
Modingoane said Gauteng Provincial Government on Human Settlements Emergency Funding Programme funded the project, which is still under construction.
“People should not illegally invade those container units because law enforcement will take action against them. We have plans for those containers”, said Modingoane.
