Born and bred in Soshanguve, North of Pretoria, Mpho Gift Tharaga (17), popularly known with his stage name“Treasure.” He is a musician, photographer, event organiser and an actor.
Growing up was never easy for Treasure as he was raised by a single mother.
“I grew up as a very poor kid from a very poor family. I needed a father, but he wasn’t around, he left when I was three years old, my mother made a protection order against him because he was a very abusive parent that’s why he left,” said Treasure.
He told Gauteng News that growing without a father was very painful as most of the time they slept without food to eat.Treasure’s brother got arrested for robbery as he was trying to make money for them to eat (he was sentenced 10 years), but even though the brother is back from prison he struggles to find a job because of a criminal record.
Treasure fell in love with music when he was just 9 years old,he said he used to listen to Gospel artists like Sechaba, and Lindi to a point where he even wanted to be like them.
“I started writing my own songs when I was 12 years old, and by that time my dream was to be like Lil Wayne,”
As much as Treasure loved Gospel as well as Hip Hop, hestarted to make a combination of hip hop and Gospel, and he said want to introduce that genre to the world (Gospel hip hop)
On the 24 July Treasure will be Dropping an EP called Wrld War 8. On this EP he said he collaborated with different artists from different countries. “I worked with Hodie from Peru, Virtuez from Nigeria, Ben brainy from Ghana, Peng G from Zambia and Maluty from Lesotho,” said Treasure.
This EP has 4 hip hop Songs and 1 Gospel hip hop Song.
“My aim is to motivate those who think that dreams never come true, to show all South African hustlers that no matter what you go through, you can make it. If the EP goes viral, Iam sure many people will be motivated because of my background,” he said.
While speaking to Gauteng News, Treasure said he sees himself owning a record label that will be signing artists Internationally one day.
“I appreciate everything single person who streams my music. I wish all young people can try to do something for their future instead of smoking drugs, drinking alcohol and all bad activities they are doing. At the end of the day, the youth of today is the leaders of tomorrow,” added Treasure.
Like most artist COVID-19 has affected him very negatively, since covid-19 he never hosted even a single event.
