The U/17 national team (Amajimbos) has qualified for the Junior AFCON tournament in Morocco next year in July despite going down 1-0 to rivals Zambia on Thursday, 26 November 2020 in Port Elizabeth.

The two teams will lock horns again on Sunday for the COSAFA u17 boys’ zonal qualifiers gold medal contest.

SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan who is in Egypt for the CAF Champions League final, said the first objective of AFCON qualification had been achieved.

‘’The AFCON tournament in Morocco will serve as qualification for the FIFA Junior u/17 World Cup. This qualification underscores SAFA’s Vision 2022 of seeing most, if not all of our national teams qualifying for major tournaments,’’ said Dr Jordaan.

Meanwhile, the u/17 women’s national team is a match away from qualifying for the FIFA World Cup while their u/20 counterparts need to negotiate three games to qualify for the World Cup as well.

‘’The u23 qualified for the Tokyo Olympics and will be one of the three African teams that will represent the continent in Japan, while COSAFA Champions Banyana Banyana will start the CAF AFCON qualifiers next year buoyed by their terrific recent form which has seen them win the regional tournament for the fourth consecutive year.’’

Dr Jordaan said Bafana Bafana are in a good position to qualify for Cameroon AFCON tournament as they lie second in their Group with the same number of points as leaders Ghana whom they meet in the penultimate match before travelling to Sudan for the final encounter.

‘’It has been some eventful year on the field of play with JVW and MaIndies being promoted to the SAFA Women Super League while Bizana Pondo Chiefs and Pretoria Callies were promoted from ABC Motsepe League to the National First Division, a phenomenal achievement,’’ said the SAFA President.
