The Democratic Alliance (DA) is opposing plans to relocate valuable artworks from the Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG) to the Museum of Africa, warning the move could place Gauteng’s cultural heritage at risk.
Following an oversight inspection, the DA says the Museum of Africa has serious shortcomings, including security gaps, poor climate control, water penetration risks and unsuitable storage access. Experts have reportedly agreed the facility does not currently meet international art preservation standards.
The party also claims renovations appear rushed to provide a quick solution ahead of the G20 summit, raising concerns about wasteful spending and long-term risks to priceless artworks.
The DA has called on Gauteng MEC for Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation Matome Chiloane and the City of Johannesburg to halt the relocation until the museum meets required standards. Questions have been submitted on renovation costs, timelines and official reports linked to the move.
The party says proper funding and expertise are needed to protect JAG’s collection for future generations.
