JMPD officers assist a lady giving birth

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers EM Lebepe and D Ledwaba were conducting foot patrols along Lillian Ngoyi and Pixely Ka Seme Streets in the Johannesburg CBD, when they were approached by an unknown man who explained to them that there was a lady in labour near the Bree Taxi Rank.

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson, Xolani Fihla, said upon arrival the officers noticed that the lady was indeed in labour, and she was about to give birth.

“Officers called for an ambulance to assist and whilst waiting for the ambulance the lady delivered a baby girl,” said Fihla.

Fihla said before the ambulance could arrive, officers noticed that the lady and baby were distraught as there were a lot of onlookers.

“An unknown lady came forward to also assist, and she bought new scissors and shoelace. Officer Lebepe using his instincts, measured the umbilical cord and used the shoelace and scissors to cut it. The ambulance soon arrived and took the health baby girl and mother to the Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital for observation,”

Meanwhile, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department management has commended the officers for the great work done by serving the City of Johannesburg and its residents with pride and dedication.
