Residents of Protea Glen protest over electricity

The people of Protea Glen extension two, Soweto have been my without electricity for the past two months after Eskom cut off a cable that transfers electricity to their homes. Residents barricaded the streets at the weekend and awaited to be addressed by their counsellor of ward 13 and seek solutions to their problems.

Local businesses in the area are highly affected by the power cuts and residents expressed in anger that there are some community members that use medical oxygen cylinders to breathe and this threatens their lives as they cannot use the machine without electricity.

Residents laid numerous complaints to Eskom but they were informed that they are required to pay R6000 to replace their meter boxes. Some of these residents claim to have paid the R6000 but ‘til today they are still without power.

Gauteng News attempted to get hold of Eskom but we were unable to reach them for comment. The protest is followed by residents of Mapetla suggesting to Eskom that the debt that Sowetans owe must be scrapped and allow them to pay R150 per month, however, residents were told by the judge to seek legal representation as the case had been remanded.
