The City Power has taken a major step toward a greener future with the launch of Phase One of its Electric Vehicle (EV) charging station in Johannesburg. The milestone marks a significant shift in the city’s approach to energy, transport, and sustainability.
According to a media statement issued on 24 March 2026, the initiative forms part of City Power’s broader 10-Point Energy Plan, aimed at modernising infrastructure, improving service delivery, and building a more resilient and environmentally friendly energy system. 
The newly launched EV Charging Complex in Booysens is expected to support the gradual transition of the City’s fleet from traditional fuel-powered vehicles to electric alternatives. This move is not only set to reduce fuel costs but also improve operational efficiency across municipal services.
City officials say the project places Johannesburg at the forefront of sustainable mobility in South Africa, while aligning with global trends in clean energy and smart city innovation. The expansion of EV infrastructure across the city will also ensure that residents and businesses can begin adopting electric vehicles more easily.
However, the success of the programme will depend heavily on protecting critical infrastructure. The City is currently dealing with electricity losses of around 29%, largely due to illegal connections and infrastructure damage. Safeguarding the network remains a top priority as new investments are rolled out. 
Beyond infrastructure, the initiative also focuses on people. City Power has committed to reskilling and upskilling its workforce to adapt to emerging technologies such as EV maintenance, battery systems, and charging networks. This is expected to create new opportunities, particularly for young people entering the energy sector.
In addition, the City has introduced programmes like the Youth Energy Ambassadors initiative, which aims to promote responsible energy use among learners and encourage communities to protect public infrastructure.
Looking ahead, City Power plans to expand the EV charging network across service delivery centres, public facilities, major transport routes, and townships. Future innovations, including battery-swapping technology, are also being explored to improve efficiency and reduce downtime.
The launch marks the beginning of a broader transformation for Johannesburg—one that prioritises sustainability, innovation, and inclusive economic growth. As the City continues investing in cleaner technologies, the EV programme is expected to play a key role in shaping a smarter and more energy-efficient future.
