Gauteng Department of Health Raises TB Awareness in Katlehong

The Gauteng Department of Health observed World Stop TB Day with a community event in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni, Today. The event aimed to raise awareness about tuberculosis, a preventable and curable disease, and mostly educate individuals who did not know much information regarding the virus.

TB survivor Hope Kubheka shared his story of contracting the disease through sharing a cigarette with friends,“It took me some time to get better, but I’m here today because I took my medication and sought help,” he said. “I urge everyone to take their meds and go for regular checkups.”

The event was MCed by Miss Criselda Kananda and Mr Khaya Mthethwa, and featured a briefing from MEC Nomantu Nkomo Ralehoko.
Health officials emphasized the importance of regular awareness events to educate communities about TB and other health issues, “events like these are crucial for informing people, especially in townships, about TB and other health matters,” said a health official. “We need to do this regularly to reduce the stats of TB and other diseases.”

The event was attended by stakeholders, including Doctor Bandile Masuku and Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni, Nkosi file Xhakaza. The Gauteng Department of Health aims to promote community-based prevention, early testing, and treatment to combat TB.
