Civil society organisations and women’s advocacy groups will gather outside the National Department of Health in Pretoria this Friday, 27 February 2026, for a public action known as “Laundry Day”, aimed at demanding accountability and improved maternity care services across South Africa.
The event will take place from 11:00 to 13:00 at the Department’s offices located at 1112 Voortrekker Road, Pretoria Townlands 351-JR.
Organisers say the initiative provides a platform for women to bring their childbirth experiences directly to health authorities, highlighting concerns around treatment, dignity, and safety during maternity care in public health facilities.
Memorandum to be Received by Health Officials
According to organisers, senior officials from the National Department of Health have confirmed they will formally receive a memorandum from protesters and address participants during the gathering.
The action is expected to serve as a moment of engagement between civil society and government, focusing on the urgent implementation of Respectful Maternity Care standards within healthcare institutions.
Symbolic Installation to Share Women’s Experiences
A central feature of “Laundry Day” will be a visual installation of hospital bedsheets displaying testimonies from mothers and survivors. The display aims to draw attention to personal experiences during childbirth and to amplify calls for compassionate, respectful, and patient-centred maternity services.
Advocacy groups say the symbolic display represents both healing and accountability, while encouraging policy reform and improved healthcare practices.
