Archbishop Desmond Tutu turns 89

Archbishop Desmond Tutu is celebrating his 89th birthday on Wednesday. His birthday coincides with the annual Desmond Tutu Peace Lecture, where Ugandan climate change activist Vanessa Nakate (23) will be the guest speaker.

Nakate made headlines when she was cropped out of a media photo taken in Davos.

This year it will be held under the theme ‘Climate Justice Globally: Now and for the Future’.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has also extended his warmest congratulations to Archbishop Tutu who is celebrating his birthday today.

The President said that, “Archbishop Tutu is a national treasure and global icon of moral consistency, spiritual virtue and the defence of the most vulnerable people not only in South Africa but around the world.

“Today we are united in celebrating the passing of another year in which we have benefited from the Archbishop’s wisdom, the bravery of his conviction in fighting for human rights, the warmth of his love for all South Africans and his care for humanity.”
