Building Collapse in Ormonde Sparks Safety Concerns

Johannesburg – Government leaders have called for a full investigation following the tragic building collapse in Ormonde, south of Johannesburg, which claimed several lives and left others injured.

Emergency services responded to the incident at Amethyst Business Park after a section of a building under construction collapsed, trapping workers beneath concrete slabs and debris. Rescue teams from the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services worked through the rubble to recover victims and ensure that no one remained trapped at the site.

Dada Morero said the city will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and determine whether building regulations were violated.

“Our priority is to understand exactly what led to this tragedy and to ensure accountability where necessary. We also extend our deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives,” Morero said.

Officials indicated that early findings suggest the building may not have had approved construction plans, raising serious concerns about compliance with municipal safety regulations.

Kedibone Diale-Tlabela also expressed concern over the incident, emphasising the need for strict adherence to construction safety standards.

“This tragedy highlights the importance of compliance with building regulations and safety measures. Authorities will work to ensure that such incidents are prevented in the future,” she said.

Authorities have since cordoned off the area while structural engineers assess the safety of the remaining structure. The City of Johannesburg has indicated that the damaged building may be demolished as part of safety measures.

The incident has sparked renewed debate about construction oversight and the enforcement of building regulations in rapidly developing parts of Johannesburg. Investigations into the cause of the collapse are ongoing.
