City of Tshwane officials and Members of the Mayoral Committee have reached out to assist Plastic View residents following a devastating fire that broke at the informal settlement on Saturday night.
The informal settlement is home to a mixture of South Africans and immigrants who live in close quarters to each other.
Tshwane Mayor Randall Williams said emergency service teams responded swiftly to extinguish the blaze.
“Through the department of community and social development services the community will be provided with 500 hygiene packs, 200 blankets, 200 mattresses and 150 food parcels,” said Williams.
Williams said 89 structures were destroyed and to date and 3 fatalities have been confirmed.
“And it is estimated that 26 people have been injured and are currently in hospital,” he said.
Williams has thanked all those who have volunteered to help by donations.
“We’ve also engaged with volunteers at the local church and respective NGO’s. Along with MMC Mpho Mehlape-Zimu from Human Settlements who is also assessing what further support can be provided to the community.”
Williams said the City will continue to monitor the situation and provide support where needed.
