South Africa has been plagued by endless violence since the beginning of this month and with the new crime statistics in for the 2018/19 financial year, the numbers are terrifying. Violent crimes have increased drastically with the murder rate moving up to 3.4% and the number of murders standing at 21 022. In the 2017/18 financial year they stood at 20 336.
52 420 sexual offences were reportedly committed and increased by 4.6% while attempted murders increased by 4.1% with 18 980 attempted murder cases being reported. Children were also charged in 736 reported murder cases .
Common assault cases increased by 3.7% while robbery with aggravating circumstances rose to 140 032 cases increasing by 1.2%
170 079 cases of assault with the intention to do grievous bodily harm were reported and the stats increased by 2.2%
This year crime clearly is on the ascension and with many gender-based violence incidents being reported it truly reflects a society at a war.
