EFF, ATM Call for Urgent Action as Zama Zama Violence Displaces Sporong Residents

Randfontein, Gauteng – The EFF and African Transformation Movement (ATM) have called for urgent government intervention following the forced displacement of more than 600 residents from Sporong, Randfontein, due to violence linked to illegal miners, known as Zama zamas.

Since December 2025, about 300 families, mainly women and children, have fled their homes after threats of violence and kidnapping. Displaced residents are currently sheltering at the Randgate Boxing Club and the Kagiso community hall.

ATM spokesperson Zama Ntshona criticised the lack of visible law enforcement, saying the failure to protect residents raises serious concerns about national security and community safety. He called for immediate deployment of police, support for affected families, and accountability for those responsible.

The EFF Gauteng also warned of a growing humanitarian crisis. Chairperson Nkululeko Dunga said overcrowded conditions at temporary shelters pose serious health risks and require urgent intervention from authorities.

Both parties urged swift state action to restore safety and stability in the area.
