Grandmothers receive blankets for winter

As winter approaches, Dipuo Difedile Care Club donated blankets to elderly women in Orlando West, Soweto. Dipuo Difedile Care Club aims to provide a platform on issues of Gender-based violence to women and children.

Founder and Coordinator of Dipuo Difedile Care Club, Dipuo May, who is also a victim of abuse said that she formed the club after going through an abusive relationship. May added that she hates abuse in all forms as she nearly died.

“I got stabbed 27 wounds by my ex-husband in Hammaskraal Pretoria. He nearly killed me as he tried to cut my throat but I pretended to be dead. My ex-husband accused me of cheating due to the rumors he heard. After stabbing me, I was in a pool of blood and he left thinking that I am dead. My sister assisted and took me to the hospital where I spent three months. I was on wheelchair for three years, and after that I was able to walk again. I opened an attempted murder case, he was arrested and sentenced for 15 years in prison. He served 7 years and got out with parole”, she said.

May added that she came to Johannesburg in Soweto to start a new life when she started the club. Through the club May managed to do feeding scheme where Standard Bank and society would bring groceries to feed the community.

“I visit clinics, churches and many places to offer counselling. I get invited throughout the entire South Africa. Currently I am a Ward Committee in Orlando West Soweto, and Women Safety Promoter under Gauteng Community Safety Department”, said May.

She said for exercises, they are in need of Community Hall or a conducive house where they can gym. May added that currently they are using Mzimhlophe Park and it is a challenge when it is raining.
“I need a place or hall for grandmothers to exercise especially when it rains. Winter is also approaching so they need to feel warm because park is an open space. Even donation of VIP big containers to run this community project are fine. I will definitely accept them with open hand. We have people from Soweto, Pretoria, Sebokeng, North West, Vosloorus and Fotchville who are joining the club”, said May.
