Indoor wearing of masks scrapped

The government has done away with the remaining COVID-19 regulations.

The rules on wearing masks indoors and the limitation on public events and gatherings have all been repealed.

Health Minister Dr Joe Phaahla gazetted the latest Health Regulations on Wednesday evening, which also scrap the limitations on the number of people allowed at public gatherings.

Travelers entering South Africa will also no longer be required to produce a vaccination certificate or a negative test result.

It’s been over two years since the COVID-19 pandemic was first identified in the country and the regulations were put in place, starting with the strict Level 5 of Lockdown in March 2020.

Phaahla’s decision follows a meeting of the National Coronavirus Command Council, which weighed in on whether the remaining COVID-19 regulations were still relevant.

Meanwhile, Phaahla and Minister in the Presidency Mondli Gungubele, are set to brief the nation at 11am on Thursday.
