Live ammunition and illegal firearm off the streets

The South African Police Services (SAPS) in conjunction with Rapid Railway Police arrested two suspects between the ages of 34 and 54, on Monday 11 November 2019, for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on two separate occasions.

“The first suspect is a 54-year-old male who was arrested at Wanderers taxi rank on corner Noord and Wanderers Streets at approximately 09:00. Our officers were patrolling on foot when they saw a suspicious-lookingmale standing next to taxis destined for Kranskop (KZN). They then approached him, searched his bag and recovered different kinds of live ammunition. He was then arrested for being in possession of ammunition”, says Captain Xoli Mbele.

The second suspect, according to Mbele, was apprehended on corner Bree and Sauer Streets at 4pm. He was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm containing live rounds and had no serial number. He had initially failed to produce a license to possess a firearm.

Both suspects will be appearing soon at the Johannesburg Magistrate Court.
