MAC recommends strict lockdown level over Easter holidays

Due to high rate of travelling during Easter holidays, Ministerial Advisory Committee (MAC) recommends South Africa to temporarily tighten lockdown restrictions in order to reduce corona infections.

MAC Professor Barry Schoub said if an advice is taken, restrictions will be for Easter weekend only.

“During Easter people travel across provinces and countries. This puts South Africa at a high risk of third wave corona virus. Events and activities held during Easter period also spread virus because people gather in many numbers at one place. Projections show that such events will bring infections between end of April and June. At this time it is winter season where virus is transmitted easily and there is flu”, he added.

MAC co-chair Professor Salim Karim said it would be better if lockdown regulations are put on level two.

“It is best if we prevent third wave before it even hit the country by putting lockdown level two in place. Tighter lockdown should mostly be considered on curfew hours, limited sale of alcohol and restrictions on gatherings”, said Karim.

According to researchers, third wave virus might even hit parts of the country end of March or beginning of April.
