Gauteng Premier David Makhura has expressed his deepest condolences following the passing of a 79-year-old man, who tested positive for Covid-19.
“I wish to convey our heartfelt condolences and express our collective grief to the family and friends of the deceased.” said Makhura.
South Africa’s Coronavirus death toll now stands at five. This was the first death of Coronavirus in Gauteng. According to the Gauteng Provincial government the deceased was admitted in a private hospital in Mogale City, West Rand on Saturday, the 28 of March 2020 and succumbed on Monday.
The province has recorded 633 COVID-19 positive people out of 1353 nationally. This news was followed President Cyril Ramaphosa announcing 10 000 field workers will be deployed to outreach villages, towns and cities to run tests to residents for COVID-19 symptoms.
Premier Makhura said that the Gauteng Provincial Council hasresolved to implement the president’s advance directives.
“Screening and testing of residents will be done in a systematic manner initially focusing in areas with the largest number contacts and high density areas that has greatest level of vulnerability,” said Makhura.
The province on Tuesday began with the screening process of residents in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg.
