Mayor Xhakaza Condemns Gunfire at Funerals, Calls for Respect and Safety

Ekurhuleni -The Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni, Alderman Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, has issued a strong call for calm, dignity, and respect during funeral proceedings, following reports of firearms being discharged at funerals and public gatherings across communities.

In an official statement released on Friday, Mayor Xhakaza urged mourners and community members to honour the solemn nature of funerals by conducting themselves responsibly. He stressed that while communities have different ways of expressing grief, the use of firearms is dangerous, unlawful, and puts lives at risk.

The Mayor strongly condemned incidents where firearms were discharged in public spaces, noting that such actions have already resulted in damage to homes and created fear among residents. He warned that reckless behaviour at gatherings threatens the safety of vulnerable community members, including children, elderly mourners, and nearby residents.

South African law strictly prohibits the discharge of firearms into the air. Authorities warn that stray bullets can cause serious injuries, damage property, and lead to fatal consequences.

“Let us not turn a moment of mourning into a tragedy. We must allow families to grieve in peace and ensure the safety of everyone attending,” Mayor Xhakaza said.

The Mayor further called on law enforcement agencies to remain alert and take decisive action against anyone found discharging firearms at funerals or public events. He emphasised that such behaviour will not be tolerated and offenders will face legal consequences.

The City of Ekurhuleni has appealed to all residents to work together to promote a culture of peace, community safety, and respect for the rule of law. Officials say community cooperation is critical in preventing unnecessary tragedies and ensuring funerals remain spaces of honour, remembrance, and support for grieving families.
