MEC Lesufi welcomes arrest of Midrand teacher accused of rape

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi has welcomed the arrest of Umqhele Secondary School teacher who allegedly raped a 16-year-old Grade 10 pupil at the Ivory Park school last week. The 38-year suspect handed himself over to police on Wednesday after a rape case was opened at a nearby police a day later after the incident.

MEC Lesufi has praised the work of the South African law enforcement agencies following the arrest.

“We always had faith and trust in the police to ensure that the suspect ends up behind bars. We leave all the matters in the capable and trustworthy hands of our judicial system and trust that justice will prevail,”

“We remain a firm opponent of any violence, particularly gender-based assaults on learners perpetrated by educators and officials expected to be taking care of the young people” MEC Lesufi Said.

The department spokesman Steve Mabona has affirmed that disciplinary procedures against the supposed attacker are as of now in progress.

“The MEC has indicated that he is a firm opponent of any violence, particularly gender-based assaults on learners so we’re not going to tolerating such incidents in and around our schools. The educator will also face a charge of absconding as he had left work without permission,”

“We always had faith and trust in the police to ensure that the suspect ends up behind bars. We leave all the matters in the capable and trustworthy hands of our judicial system and trust that justice will prevail.” he said.
