MEC Maile announces ten administrators who will run Tshwane

Gauteng Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Lebogang Maile has announced a team of ten administrators to take over the running of the City of Tshwane .

“This is a ground breaking step to restore good governance. We have appointed and deployed people who will help us to turn things around. They will account to COGTA on a monthly basis Things were bad in the City. We now want to ensure it gets better.”, said Maile. 

Tshwane has been without mayor and city manager for some time.

MEC Maile told journalists at a press briefing that administrators had been tasked with taking over functions of the municipality such as implementing government systems and procedures. The ten member team was also expected to develop a turnaround strategy for the City of Tshwane. 

The Democratic Alliance  is taking the matter to court on Tuesday. They are asking that the effect of the dissolution besuspended. Papers in their urgent application were on Friday filed at the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria.

Last week, the National Council of Province backed the decision to dissolve and place Tshwane under administration.

This is after the Gauteng Executive Council, led by Premier David Makhura decided to invoke section 139 of the constitution, following the collapse of several council meetings.
