Gauteng Human Settlement, Urban Planning, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Lebohang Maile confirmed that he would look into alleged corruption in Sedibeng district’s Lesedi municipality.

Maile said that there are also alleged irregularities involving a multi-million rand security contract.

“Acting Lesedi Municipal Manager Gugu Thimane faces charges of flouting supply chain management prescripts and Municipal Finance Management Act. Thimane awarded Bravo Span 90cc a tender of R50 million without following procedures”, said Maile.

Democratic Alliance’s Gauteng Finance spokesperson Adriana Randall asked MEC Maile to investigate the matter.

“Municipality has to respond to these allegations in writing and provide relevant information explaining how the tender was awarded. Those who are involved in this alleged corruption should face mighty law, if indeed corruption took place when the tender was offered. Thimane should also face immediate suspension when investigations proceed. DA will raise questions to Gauteng Provincial Legislature to confirm whether they advertised a security tender”, said Randall.

MEC Maile ensured to urge all municipalities in Gauteng to adopt the open tender system, as it is useful in combating corruption in different government departments. He added that transparency and discreet are what he expected for public funds. This also applies in accordance with finance regulation done by government.

“Corruption and tender fraud should be eliminated wherever they mushroom. This is crime to poor residents. Public funds should not be used to benefit certain individuals or entities through wrong followed procedures. We need transparent service delivery”, said Maile.
