Minister Ronald Lamola launches prison radio station

The Brandvlei Correctional Centre in the Western Cape, has launched the continent’s first-ever prison radio station.

It’s a state of the art broadcasting facility, Basic Radio 98.7 is a digital radio station and operated by inmates.

Correctional Services Minister Ronald Lamola recently launched the station and was on air alongside prominent radio personality, Phat Joe.

The aim of the radio station is to give inmates a voice, whilst rehabilitating them. On a radio interview with Lamola, the host, asked the Minister questions on the ongoing Busasa case, stating that it’s a burning question for most inmates on what’s to happen to happen to them.

“It’s been a long time coming to give our inmates a platform that is theirs to air out their truths and concerns”, said the Minister.

“I’m here with a message. I’m going to take this station nationwide. You guys will be heard coast to coast. I’m talking to your managers and programme directors right now”, said Phat Joe.
