Following the 2019 national elections on 8 May 2019, African National Congress (ANC) won the elections.
There was first sitting of provincial legislature, where new Members of Parliament (MPLs) were sworn in at Gauteng Provincial Legislature, Johannesburg.
The MPLs had to swear before starting to perform in the legislature. They must affirm the faithfulness to the Republic and obedience to the Constitution.
Gauteng Premier Honourable David Makhura was re-elected as Gauteng Premier again. Makhura extended his gratitude to the people of South Africa who came out in numbers and vote.
“A total of 4.3 million of people voted and now we have plans to grow Gauteng Province together. Congratulations to other Ministers who got elected in the government and we have to serve the people regardless of how they voted. We heard the issues raised by concerned citizens, they want creation of jobs, want access to housing and land. We also have to fight crime and corruption”, he said.
Makhura added that other raised issues by the society includes, fixing ailing public healthcare system. He said the society wants them to provide all children with better educational opportunities and skills for the economy for the future.
“People want efficient, reliable and affordable modern and intergraded public system for the entire province. We have to invest in better infrastructure. People want us to work together with municipalities therefore to address backlogs in housing and basic services. People in informal settlements and old townships want improvement in service delivery. Small businesses in townships want decisive government support”, said Makhura.
Gauteng Division of High Court Dunstan Mlambo congratulated Makhura and said he should consider bringing back respect in the high court.
“High Court has lost respectability and you should retain it”, said Mlambo.
Ntombi Mekgwe was voted as the Speaker with 30 votes.
“We have to work together as we are forced by the constitution”, said Mekgwe.
