New tourism MEC encourages youth to join the sector

New MEC from Department of Tourism Mmamoloko Kubayi held youth in tourism dialogue at Disoufeng Pub and Restaurant in Soweto, to encourage them to join the tourism industry.

Kubayi said tourism and hospitality market could be done digital as well.

“Youth should recognise tourism as entrepreneurship sector and start their own businesses. You do not stress about how the world will know about your business, but you can take photos and put them on social media platforms.

CAP SETA representative Pricilla Mahlangu said they deal with tourism and they are happy that the event was held in Soweto.

“We place more than 3000 learners in different programmes. I encourage youth to learn more about tourism. Small SMMEs should apply for internships and grant at our department, we also offer skills development.”

Acting CEO South African Tourism Sthembiso Dlamini said tourisms has a positive economic growth in South Africa. Dlamini added that tourism also promote South Africa as economic sector, product launcher and quality assurance. Tourism sector boasts itself with quality products. Through it, we show the world our cultural diversity. Tourists come to South Africa to see how citizens live which means it creates an emotional connection through marketing. The sector works to transform the industry by owning the production”, she said.

Kubayi said they also create employment through art and designs which is now a channel to display products available in South Africa. She added that the expo shows Kasi vibe and townships available in the country.

“Youth should put innovative ideas in practical as tourists or economic drivers are young people between 18-35. The entire South Africa must fall under tourism and citizens should have connections of travelling, no matter the sector they are in. Citizens should also travel across the country therefore to become tour guides. We visited Soweto to encourage youth to push doors and hustle. We are here to deliver more information about tourism, how to benefit in the sector and who to contact”, said Kubayi.

Youth Empowerment Service Dr Tashmia Ismail Saville said as the sector, they are prioritizing rural and townships in the country. She added that they also encourage growth in tourism.

“South Africa diversity gives an edge as well as treasure of having wild life access. We also offer tourism attractions and crafts such as Vilakazi Street. Tourism spots should be created near hotels, bed and breakfast and restaurants. There is value chain in tourism market sector. As youth they should work together, bring ideas and will have access to grants”, she said.
