Johannesburg – The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has dismissed viral social media claims that a student received R630,434.44 from the funding body, describing the allegation as false and misleading.
In a media statement released on 16 March 2026, NSFAS said the image circulating online appears to be manipulated and possibly AI-generated, and does not correspond with any legitimate transaction within its system.
The scheme clarified that it does not make large lump-sum payments directly to students. Instead, funds are paid to universities and colleges, which then distribute approved allowances according to established guidelines.
NSFAS said its systems remain secure and confirmed that no irregular payment or breach has occurred.
The organisation also warned that it may pursue legal action against individuals who deliberately spread misinformation that harms the reputation and integrity of the scheme.
Members of the public have been urged to rely on official NSFAS communication channels for accurate information.
