NUM and Numsa refute claim of wage deal at Eskom

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) have refuted claims of a wage agreement at Eskom.

The unions have been quick to respond to remarks by Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan on Tuesday.

Gordhan said during a media briefing that the unions have agreed to return to work.

But in a joint statement, the unions accused Gordhan of jeopardising talks by pre-empting the outcome.

“We want to set the record straight. We have not come to an agreement with Eskom. An offer was tabled which members are engaging on. For the next few days, we will be consulting members to find out if they accept the proposal or not.

“We will meet on Friday 1 July at the Central Bargaining Forum where we will formally respond to it as parties. We demand that minister Pravin Gordhan withdraw his statement about an agreement immediately. We condemn him for his reckless behaviour.”
