Number of fatalities in Tshwane flooding rises to four

The City of Tshwane has announced that the number of fatalities which have been recorded has risen to four. This comes after the flooding incidents the City experienced from 4 February 2022.

The City’s spokesperson Thabo Mabaso said, the body of theman whose bakkie was washed away in Centurion has been discovered.

“In continued search for possible victims who might have been swept away in the floods, the SAPS recovered the body of a man on the afternoon of 6 February 2022 from a bakkie that was washed away in the Centurion area on the night of the 5 February 2022,” said Mabaso.

Mabaso said the emergency services department confirmed that the body of a man, who allegedly drowned in his shack at Soul City Informal Settlement in Mamelodi, was recovered by the SAPS and Pathology Services.

“The SAPS dive team discovered and recovered the body of a man from his Audi SUV that was washed away and stuck near the Centurion Lake Hotel.”

The dive team discovered the body underneath the hotel around midday yesterday.

Mabaso said  the search for other victims continues. “The search for three victims, who are believed to be the driver of an Uber and two passengers, who are believed to have been washed away by the Olifantspruit in Midstream is still ongoing in the Irene area,”

Residents have been cautioned against crossing flooded low bridges.
