Orlando West residents receive food parcels

Nelson Mandela Foundation together with NBA Africa recently gave Orlando West residents, in Soweto food parcels.

The two organisations which targeted vulnerable people and schools, distributed food such as vegetables, fruits, mealie meal, rice and non-perishable at Ikageng Youth and Children Centre in Orlando, where they were handed to residents.

Nelson Mandela Foundation chief executive Sello Hatang said different stakeholders, funders and the public had put hands together by contributing to donate food.

“We all stood together with Each1Feed1 emergency relief food delivery initiative, which helps vulnerable communities across South Africa. Since Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown, poverty has affected communities, especially vulnerable ones. We have 700 food parcels to distribute in Gauteng during October month. Each food parcel costs R1 500 and can at least last longer in a family”, he said.

Hatang said the foundation aims to support the country in honour of Nelson Mandela. He added that Ikageng Youth and Children Centre is a non- profit organisation taking care of over 1 000 children.

“They care for children in Soweto and provide food parcels every month to vulnerable families. The organisation also teaches the residents about planting crops at their gardens”, Hatang added.

Ikageng Youth and Children Centre Project Manager Carol Dyantyi said the centre mostly assists children who are abandoned by their parents or are heads of their households due to passing away of parents.

“It is heart-breaking as some children spent some days without food because they do not have means. Some are sick and on treatment thus have to eat before taking in their medicine”, said Dyantyi.
