Protest over electricity erupted in Soweto, delaying elections

Police are monitoring the situation in Naledi, Soweto after municipal election voting was delayed due to unrest in the area.

Community members threatened to prevent voting from taking place as an act of protest against service delivery interruptions.

Protesting residents said they have not had electricity for almost six months.

Police broke off two locks obstructing the entrance to the voting venue and urged protesters to allow voting to commence.

Community members have been blocking the gate to the church where voting is supposed to take place. Police are trying to break the lock but community members pushing back and not allowing anyone near.

However, police are monitoring the area and elections are currently underway.
