After a protest outside the City Power head office in Reuven Booysens where protesters were complaining about the lack of employment and the process used to hire the Trade Assistants, the City Power came in defence.
The spokesperson for the City Power Isaac Mangena says they can confirm that 200 posts were advertised in May.
He mentioned that they received 900 applications and only those who met the requirements did written assessments. From the assessments only successful candidates were selected and appointed.
“A section of the protesters are employees of our contractors who are of the view that we shouldn’t have advertised the posts but absorb them since they are already working for the City Power, albeit indirectly,” says Mangena.
The City Power met with the protesters and decided to launch an investigation into their grievances, including the allegations of nepotism in hiring some of the Trade Assistants and they will give them feedback on Wednesday, next week.
Mangena lastly said, “We have an obligation to ensure that we support the country’s efforts to create employment and help in building the economy.”
