SAHRC says government turned a blind eye on Kliptown

The South African Human Rights Commission visited Kliptown in Soweto on Monday following the complaint lodged by residents in the area.

The commission conducted a site inspection to assess the genuineness of the allegations relating to the lack of basic services and socio-economic challenges in Kliptown, despite millions being allocated to the restoration of the area.

Residents are blaming government officials for the lack of service delivery related to housing, electricity and flushing toilets.

Human Rights Commission provincial manager Buang Jones says the government has turned a blind eye on Kliptown

“We observe that there was a lack of adequate housing there were 20 families were using one toilet, they were still using bucket toilets they experienced spillages.

“General under development in the area people are illegally connected to the electricity. Many people are still on waiting lists for houses this is despite them handing over a memorandum of grievances to the provincial government and the city of Johannesburg nothing has been done to improve their social conditions,” Jones adds.
