SANCO confirms ANC’s no confidence motion intentions

City of Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba said he is aware that African National Congress (ANC) intends to table a motion of no confidence, through the march that was held by SANCO and ANC Councillors in Johannesburg last week.

Mashaba said there were ANC aligned wing of SANCO and top ANC brass such as Geoff Makhubo, current ANC Johannesburg Region Chairperson and his followers.

“Motion will no doubt present different pretences to justify it. The truth is that ANC tried to regain power in Johannesburg from the first day I became a mayor of the City. This has been a form of orchestrating protests of former Jozi@Work beneficiaries, with efforts to destabilize the union environment. It was done by weaponising Chapter 9 Institutions and Provincial Government against the City. It also included filing of frivolous criminal charges and prior motions of no confidence”, he said.

Mashaba added that taps of corruption and tenderpreneurship have been shut down by multi-party government’s crackdown on corruption.

“The on-going investigations in corruption within Alexandra Renewal Project are progressively showing how resources meant for development within the City, were looted to benefit the ANC and their connected few. Over 5000 cases under investigation by the City’s anti-corruption unit, more than R33 billion in expenditure, the ANC’s ability to finance a local government election in 2021 is impacted. Councillor Makhubo is alleged to have masterminded a R30 million windfall to his company, Molelwane Consulting, by unduly acting as a broker for Regiments Fund Managers, giving the fund managers unfettered access to lucrative deals within the City”, he added.

Mashaba said the relationship continued after he was appointed MMC of Finance under the previous Mayor, Parks Tau’s administration. He added that a criminal investigation into this matter is still ongoing.

“Corruption taps have run dry and their looting of public finances is being exposed. The simple truth of the multi-party government is turning around the decline of Johannesburg Infrastructure backlogs are being reversed. These also include clinic hours being extended; rehabilitation centres are being opened, JMPD has become more effective than ever before in tackling crime and Inner City project. With R20 billion worth of investment committed to date, is emerging that will forever change Johannesburg”, he said.

Mashaba said ANC aims to prevent a situation where it must contest 2021 election in Johannesburg comparing its dismal record of failure against the successes of the multi-party government. He added that it was also for for its campaign to be deprived of the proceeds corruption.

“Leadership of multi-party government has been based on consultation, engagement and a willingness to work with parties to bring change to Johannesburg”, said Mashaba.
