Community members in Soshanguve, Block X in Pretoria recently wrote a petition to the City of Tshwane municipality about leaking sewage. They are asking for pipes to be repaired before this week ends.
Piet Manaka,a community member said they have been complaining to the city about leaking pipes for many years.He said the sewage put their health at risk as they might end up sick due to bad smell.
“Our health system will be affected as we have started coughing because of bad smell. We endured to this situation for a long time as pipes started leaking in 2018. Blocked pipes caused raw sewage bubbles flowing on the streets. It is unfortunate that children dip their feet on sewage when playing on the streets.Wecame to the conclusion of drafting a petition last week Monday to municipality. On the petition we are asking them to come and unblock sewer pipes before end of this week”, he added.
Manaka said they want a final solution as municipality tried to fix this problem but it kept on resurfacing.
City of Tshwane staff chief Jordan Griffiths said they have reports of leaking sewage from Soshanguve and is not the first time happening. He said the issue was resolved but not done according to time set by the city.
“We are aware that it is affecting community members. The municipality is working on providing quality service to the city residents. We do respond to issues raised by community. The repeated overflow of sewage shows that material that was blocking the line got removed. Tshwane teams have noticed that manhole cover was stolen and objects blocked the line”, said Griffiths.
