An electrifying match that had the potential of seeing a plethora of goals being scored but disappointed with the countless misses. As early as the fourth minute Highlands Park was on a mission to shake things up and almost succeeded when Mothobi Mvala struck a heated shot that was saved by the goalkeeper.
Sundowns had to retaliate and swiftly did so in the 26thminute with Themba Zwane dribbling his way through Highlands Park’s tight defence and falling short of hitting the net when the keeper made the right move.
Although the stadium wasn’t packed to capacity on this wacky Wednesday the atmosphere was surely filled with tension and excitement. Towards the end of the first half Sundowns was dominant and displayed a ‘wonderful brand of fast-flowing football’ as stated by one of the commentators.
Their persistence paid off towards the end of the match, in the 91st minute, when Uruguayan substitute Mauricio Affonso shattered Highlands Park’s hopes of walking away with a draw. Affonso struck a beautiful goal from within the box after getting a pass from midfielder Themba Zwane.
Sundowns have moved up to second place on the Absa Premiership log and will be facing Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday.
