The family of former City of Johannesburg mayor Mpho Moerane has said that while he was currently unconscious
and in a critical condition, he was in a stable condition in hospital.
This comes after “fake” claims yesterday on Tuesday that Moerane had succumbed to his injuries sustained from a car accident last week.
Giving an update on Moerane’s condition today on Wednesday morning, family spokesperson Mike Maile accused staffers att Netcare Milpark private hospital of being unprofessional for allegedly leaking the news on Moerane’s condition.
“Comrade Moerane is unconscious at the moment, however, I can’t go into details of his illness. The family is distraught,” Maile said.
“I don’t think that anyone is going through what the family is going through and the rumours are not making it easier for them.”
Meanwhile, ANC’s national spokesperson Pule Mabe said these were hard times for the party.
“These are hard times for the ANC. Mpho is in here just behind us and all that we are hoping for and wishing for is that he recovers, bounces back and comes back to life and does what a caucus leader of the ANC is expected to do,” Mabe said.
“We know that Mpho is a fighter and are hopeful that he is going to bounce back much stronger.”
The crash that injured Moerane came a few days before the ANC’s regional conference in Johannesburg, where he was expected to contest for the position of chairperson.
Mabe said the conference was of little concern to the party while Moerane’s life was on the line.
“We are not worried about congresses now because the life of a comrade supersedes a congress,” he said.
“A congress only elects you to discharge a responsibility. We can never measure how we live according to how much we are affirmed by congress, so it’s unfair.”
