Tshwane mayor joins door-to-door campaign to distribute title deeds to beneficiaries in Refentse

Executive Mayor of Tshwane, Randall Williams says he had an opportunity to join MMC for Human Settlements, Councillor Mpho Mehlape-Zimu, as her department continued with its door-to-door campaign to handover title deeds to beneficiaries.

He said the door-to-door campaign was launched late last month with the view of accelerating the issuing of title deeds. Primarily to the elderly and people with disabilities who find it difficult to go to municipal offices to collect their title deeds.

“As part of the programme I joined the team on Monday, 20 September 2021, as we distributed title deeds in the Refentse area, formerly known as Stinkwater,” Williams said.

He noted that the city previously struggled to locate the beneficiaries as the area is an old settlement. Nevertheless, Williams added that the beneficiaries expressed gratitude as many had lost hope waiting for title deeds for years.

“The handover of title deeds is always a moving experience as beneficiaries were quite emotional. There are residents we assisted who had been waiting for over 20 years to receive their title deeds and in some cases had lost all hope,” Williams said.

Williams added that the door-to-door title deeds handover campaign is set to continue until end of September 2021, as the city is working towards clearing out the unclaimed title deeds backlog.

“I strongly believe that the distribution of title deeds is an important programme to empower residents and assert their property rights,” concluded Williams.
