TUT Students Demand Opening of The Institution

The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) students recently wore their masks and marched to TUT Pretoria campus to submit a memorandum of grievances. They were complaining that they are unable to study at home. Their demands included the opening of residences and that postgraduates and all final year students resume with their classes as soon as possible.

Other issues contained in the memorandum include the need for laptops, living allowance for students who are living off- campus. Student leader Lenient Motaung, stated that the students have raised these issues to management because they cannot study at home. “We want the University to allow us back to the campus and residences which we believe are ready and meet all the safety measures and precautions.”

Nduduzo Kunene who is part of student’s leadership said that they have noted the communique of the institution on the readiness plan and they are happy with it.

“Our biggest issue is that the University has never communicated with us as students. We raised many complaints to the institution on how students will be welcomed back including the time frames that are reasonable to students but we never got the response, ”said Kunene.

Another student leader Kevin Phehla added that the institution is not complying with Covid-19 regulations at the entrance gate. “There was no temperature gauge when we passed the security gate . Our campus needs to apply all precautions at the entrance, but the residences are fine,” said Phehla.

He suggested that Health Science students be allowed back so that they help the institution with Covid-19 regulations plan.
