The University of Pretoria’s oral and dental hospital held a scarf charity for their patients and the indigent on Saturday.
“After last year’s successful charity drive, we decided to make it an annual event”, said prosthodontics department head Leanne Sykes.
“Winter is cold and our patients sit in the cold for hours, so we came up with this initiative because we knew someone out there was in need of something warm,” she said.
“Next year we want to have it at the beginning of June so that everyone can get a scarf before winter.”
We also want to get more students involved. This year, we managed to get jerseys, beanies, gloves and blankets. What makes it special is that most items were handmade.”
The scarves were hung on two fences at 06:45 on the day and by 08:30 everything was gone, according to Sykes.
“Our patients and everyone who benefited loved it, so I would say it was a success”, she said.
It warmed her heart to see all the big smiles, she added. “A huge thanks to everyone who contributed so generously.”
Sykes is positive that next year’s charity drive will be bigger and better.
